The Sudanese Ministry of Health inaugurated an emergency project on Wednesday aimed at reviving operations at 40 hospitals across Sudan as a step towards providing healthcare services.

The emergency project, launched in Port Sudan, targets 10 Sudanese states as the first phase of the initiative.

Medical equipment and devices were delivered to Port Sudan Emergency Hospital, with operations to continue sequentially in other states.

During the inauguration ceremony, Sudanese Health Minister Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim pledged to operationalize all the hospitals in the country.

“According to our latest report, there are approximately 540 hospitals across Sudan,” he stated. “These hospitals are managed by the Federal Ministry of Health along with state health ministries, and we strive for the full restoration of these hospitals.”

For his part, Ahlam Abdulrasoul, the Director General of Health in Red Sea State, revealed that the project is being bankrolled by the European Union, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other partners.

“We are inaugurating this project from the Red Sea State. In truth, this project is graciously sponsored by the European Union, the World Health Organization, and other partners,” she said.

Abdulrasoul praised the efforts of the partners and emphasized the government’s commitment to providing medical services to patients under the current conditions.

Earlier, the Sudanese Ministry of Health issued an emergency appeal for the reconstruction of hospitals and healthcare facilities destroyed by the ongoing war. According to previous reports from the ministry, over 80 percent of health facilities in Sudan are out of service due to the war. This has led to patient overcrowding in several hospitals in the eastern states of Sudan.

Since 15 April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing military confrontations between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), starting in the capital Khartoum and spreading to several states across the country. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions of Sudanese people both internally and externally, while all local and international efforts and initiatives have failed to stop the war.
