Local residents in South Sudan’s Yei border town say the long awaited electricity supply has started again in the state capital on Monday after one month shutdown.
Yei town area has witnessed a “power blackout” due to lack of fuel and continuous insecurity in the region for the last many months.
Earlier last month residents in the town called on the government to ensure that security is restored and roads opened so as to allow access to businesses, humanitarian support and supply of fuel to the area.
Currently, power supply in Yei stands at seven hours per day from 8:00 a.m. with a break at midday and resuming at 7 p.m. up until 10 p.m. in the night.
A resident in Yei town called Boboya expressed happiness saying resumption of the electricity in the town will improve security and businesses in the town. He called on the government to support Yei electric power plant (YECO) with enough fuel.
“Today, I am very happy, because the power has come back, In the absence of YECO, the security was not good but now with the coming of YECO, I hope this will improve security and businesses in terms of charging phones and surgical operations at the hospital. Therefore I would like to call on the management of the power company to continue with their work and I also call on the government to join hands with YECO so as to help the people in the area,” he said.
