The head of Egyptian intelligence, Major General Abbas Kamel, came to Juba where he met with President Salva Kiir.

The president’s spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny told Radio Tamazuj that General Kamel visited Juba on Wednesday and said he conveyed a message from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to President Kiir.

“The Egyptian intelligence chief made a quick visit to Juba and returned to Egypt,” he said.

Ateny noted that the message from President Al-Sisi focused on peace efforts in Sudan and the implementation of the revitalised peace deal in South Sudan.

According to Egyptian media, Kamel also met with his South Sudanese counterpart to enhance security relations between the two countries, without revealing any details regarding the content of the message conveyed to Kiir.

In June, Kiir’s adviser for security affairs Tut Gatluak met Egypt’s leader Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo.

Kiir also met al-Sisi on the sidelines of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation FOCAC 2018, which was held in Beijing in September 2018.

According to a statement issued at the time, the leaders had discussed developing cooperation between both countries, as well as South Sudan’s political and security situation.
