The Eastern Lakes government has ordered the removal of all roadside checkpoints in the state, according to the minister of information.

Nelson Makoi Makur, Eastern Lakes State minister of information, says removing checkpoints will help local traders to move goods freely.

A local radio station reported that residents of Eastern Lakes appreciate the removal of illegal checkpoints, but they are also worried that the removal of checkpoints could increase crime.

The move also comes after complaints from aid organizations about illegal taxation of relief trucks moving northwestwards into the Bahr el Ghazal region.
