The police in South Sudan have revealed that a child was killed and a local chief is fighting for his life after he was shot in both legs in different incidents during the Easter celebrations in the country.
The two incidents happened in the capital, Juba, and Yambio of Western Equatoria State.
Major General Daniel Justin, the police spokesman, speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday said a gang of armed youth attacked a home in Juba’s Rock City neighborhood of Juba on Sunday, killing the child.
“People had peaceful celebrations across the country but we had some few cases of crimes here in Juba which led to the death of a child,” Justin said.
The police mouthpiece said all eight members of the gang were arrested in Juba and investigations into the death of the child have been launched.
Maj. Gen. Justin said that in a separate incident on Sunday, a chief was shot at by a gang of armed youth in Yambio.
“A chief was also shot on his legs by gangs in Yambio County,” he said.
He noted that they had received a report of unrest in Malakal, Upper Nile State but he could not provide further details.
“In the west of Malakal town, the police received a report of tribal problems, but they stopped and we did not receive casualty details,” he added.
According to the police, the rest of the country was peaceful, assuring citizens that the police are on standby to protect them.
