The East Darfur teachers’ strike over non-payment of arrears since 2011 has continued almost two months.

A source told Sudan Tamazuj that the state government has not fulfilled its pledge to settle payment to teachers for over seven weeks.

The source said the government is not serious about resolving education sector challenges, saying the government imposed emergency laws against the wishes of the public.

Previously, East Darfur education minister Sidiq Abdel-Nabi said his ministry made significant efforts with the federal government in Khartoum to resolve the crisis, but acknowledged they have been unsuccessful.

Another source said the Khartoum state education ministry may pay arrears on 25 November. That source predicted lifting of the strike by late October.
