East Darfur official says calm restored after tribal killings

Local authorities in Sudan’s East Darfur state said the security situation is calm following a bloody conflict between the Ma’alia and Reizigat tribes in the state last week.

Local authorities in Sudan’s East Darfur state said the security situation is calm following a bloody conflict between the Ma’alia and Reizigat tribes in the state last week.

In a press statement yesterday, East Darfur deputy governor Ahmed Kibir claimed that calm has been restored in Um Rakoba village where fighting left over 170 dead between the two warring parties.

“The security situation is stable and what happened in Um Rakoba was controlled and forces were deployed,” he said.

Kibir requested an urgent intervention by UNAMID to stop further fighting and bloodshed among civilians.

The official said that the state government and native administration from the two sides are working tirelessly to control the situation.

He urged both nomadic tribes to exercise restraint and work for better future in the state.

At least 51 Rizeigat tribesmen were killed and over 70 were wounded, whereas about 123 Ma’alia tribesmen were killed and over 70 were wounded in those clashes, according to the deputy governor.

Last week, Ma’alia tribesmen in the Sudanese capital Khartoum handed a petition to President Omar al Bashir requesting urgent intervention to stop killings in the state.
