At least 11 people were killed in a gunmen attack on commercial vehicles in the Shurum area of Yassin Locality in East Darfur, an official has said.
Musa Suleiman Najm al-Din, acting Governor of East Darfur State, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that casualties in Wednesday’s incident included three women and eight men.
“An armed group opened fire on vehicles and killed 11 people, including three women, between the Shurum and Tor Taan stations in East Darfur,” he said.
Musa said that soon after the incident, a force from the Rapid Support Command trailed the gunmen from the Shaeria area, captured one of them and also impounded an armed combat vehicle near the Labado area.
He said the bodies of the dead were taken to the El Daein Hospital morgue while the suspect has been arrested by the police. The administrator said his government would remain vigilant in fighting crime in the area.
Meanwhile, Journalist Abdul Rahman Al-Aggeb said that he lost three members of his family, namely Dr. Iman Abdullah, her sister Amani Abdullah, and their aunt Noura Hamad Mariha.
“The incident occurred in the Khor Shorum area, located between El-Daein and Nyala,” he said.
Al-Aggeb further said they suspect the number of the gunmen could have been more than 20.
The current war between the Sudanese army, led by Sudan’s de facto ruler, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohammed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, has raged for 10 months, creating lawlessness in many parts of the country.
The number of people displaced by conflict since 15 April 2023 inside and outside of Sudan has reached 8.1 million, according to UN figures. Since mid-April 2023, ACLED has recorded about 13,900 reported fatalities in Sudan.
