A delegation from the East Darfur State Government at the weekend visited the Al-Riqibiyat area of the Bahr Al-Arab locality to assess the losses suffered by traders following a recent fire that consumed the whole market.

The team led by Acting Governor Musa Suleiman Najm al-Din and the Deputy Commissioner’s representative, Fadel Saeed Madibbo, addressed the traders and citizens in Al-Riqibiyat. They told the traders that their visit sought to evaluate the losses incurred in the fire incident to compensate them.

Acting Governor Suleiman pledged partial compensation to the traders for the losses and damages caused by the fire.

The Al-Riqibiyat Market was engulfed in flames last Friday, resulting in substantial losses. The losses have since been estimated at 40 Billion Sudanese Pounds, equivalent to USD 40 Million.

The Al-Riqibiyat area straddles the commercial border zone between the northern and southern Darfur states and is located two kilometers north of the Bahr Al-Ghazal area.
