Sudan’s Border Protection Force (BPF) dismissed claims of troop defections within the unit deployed in East Darfur.

Media in Sudan’s capital Khartoum reported that elements in the BPF had defected to Darfuri rebels.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Wednesday, BPF field commander Brigadier General Abdul Rahman denied any defections.

He accused a local trader who had escaped to South Sudan of claiming to be a spokesman of the force and of spreading lies.

“He was just a trader in East Darfur, but he fled to South Sudan for personal reasons,” he said.

Abdul Rahman reiterated that there was no munity of any forces under his command, adding they are still loyal to the government.
