Suspected cases of East Coast Fever were detected in Ikotos County of Eastern Equatoria State, according to a report by Radio Emmanuel in Torit.
State Animal and Fisheries Resources Minister Martine Lorika Lojam told the radio station on his return from a two-day visit to the affected areas that swelling of glands under animals’ ears, bleeding nostrils, bloody diarrhea and urine were symptoms of the fever.
Lorika cited reports of similar symptoms of East Coast Fever at Loturutur area of the Lokwa community and advised the people to purchase drugs for their animals. The minister advised cattle keepers to isolate sick animals and not to flee from one place to another to avoid spreading the disease.
He said the government is giving drugs to cattle owners at cost recovery prices to enable the government raise funds for more stock in the store.
