Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Information Mark Akio admitted that Ugandan troops have intruded more than 15 kilometres into South Sudan’s Magwi County.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Akio said the Ugandan forces came and opened gunfire while trying to evict South Sudanese residents in the area.
He said there were no casualties or loss of properties reported so far. However, he said local authorities do not know the reason that led the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) to occupy South Sudanese territory.
The state official indicated that it is the first time for such a thing to happen in the county. He said state governor Louis Lobong Lojore visited the area, saying they are still waiting to know what had happened.
Meanwhile, Mawien Makol, spokesman of the foreign ministry, said his government is working to resolve the problem without giving further details.
“The government is aware of what had happened, and we are working to find a solution to the problem. The state governor has paid a visit to the area to resolve the issue” he said.
