The Eastern Equatoria State government over the weekend declared humanitarian emergencies in the counties of Lafon, Budi, and Kapoeta East due to drought and fire outbreaks that have left thousands hungry and homeless.

Patrick Oting Cyprian, the state’s information minister told the press on Thursday that the government called on humanitarian agencies to come to the aid of the affected communities.

Recently, a fire broke out in Lotobok Boma in Lafon County destroying 213 houses and over 106 granaries leaving thousands homeless and in dire need of humanitarian assistance. A similar incident occurred in Budi County and other areas where due to the dry season, fast winds spread quickly.

Meanwhile, in the Jie area and Nadapal, drought has led to severe water shortages which have reportedly led to the death of livestock and people.

Minister Oting said Governor Louis Lobong Lojore last Thursday met humanitarian agencies in Torit and directed them to carry out need assessments in the affected areas and quickly respond to save lives

“Our governor called partners meeting with humanitarian organizations listed places like Yahiyahi, Jie that are affected by drought. He asked the humanitarians urgently intervene because the Jie and Nadapal areas need water,” he said. “The Kenyans have already put water points for the Turkana and their cows are now drinking there. We need to do the same.”

Minister Oting said the state government is working hard to ensure the people in need get support through humanitarian agencies.
