Duk relief coordinator killed in road ambush

A senior relief official in Duk County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State was killed in an ambush by unknown gunmen along the Panyagoor-Duk road last month, a local official said.

Twic North County Commissioner Deng Mabeny told Radio Tamazuj today that a government official who was working as coordinator at the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC) in Duk County was killed by unidentified criminals while heading to his county. The county official couldn’t remember the victim’s name.

“He left Panyagoor on 3 October and he headed to Duk County, while on his way, he fell into a road bush, and he was killed on the spot by unknown gunmen,” said Mabeny.

The commissioner pointed out that he could not confirm the identity of the perpetrators due to recurrent incidents that happened last month. However, he accused criminals from the Nou Nuer tribe of involvement in the killing of the RRC coordinator.

“On 5 October, Warnyol local Youths clashed with unknown gunmen at a place called Pabarcikok and they managed to kill one person who was later identified as a Nuer,” he said.

Radio Tamazuj couldn’t reach leaders of the Lou Nuer tribe to comment on the matter.

Separately, Commissioner Mabeny said that all county commissioners in Jonglei State are currently holding consultative meetings in preparations for a peace conference between Boma and Jonglei states scheduled to take place on 1 December.
