The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has donated seeds and farm tools to at least 1,000 households in Duk Pagak County of South Sudan’s Jonglei State, a local official said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday, the county commissioner, James Yien Jal said the donation excited the locals preparing to cultivate for the first time since civil war broke out in December 2013.
“People have not been cultivating in the county since 2013 due to insecurity and lack of seeds. We talked to ICRC and they supplied seeds of okra, maize, sorghum and farm tools,” said Yien.
He lauded ICRC’s support, saying it will improve peoples’ livelihoods.
South Sudan has a wealth of untapped agricultural assets, but only about 5 percent of its land is cultivated, despite the huge potentials.
