Jacob Akech Deng was sworn-in as Commissioner of Duk Padiet County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State despite rejection by a section of his community.

The new official was sworn-in by Governor Philip Aguer on Friday.

On Thursday, the Duor clan rejected the new commissioner, accusing him of creating division among the four clans of Hol community.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj after his swearing-in, Commissioner Akech welcomed the appointment and pledged to work with all community members of Duk Padiet.

“My first priority as the new commissioner of Duk Padiet County is to unite Hol community. As we all know, there is more power and prosperity in unity than division.  So, consultations among Hol community within the county and diaspora will promote reconciliation and peaceful coexistence,” said Akech.

Akech pledged that he will cooperate with traditional leaders and state authorities in order to improve security and fight in the county.

Those sworn-in alongside Commissioner Akech include health minister Rachel Amuor, information minister Atong Kuol Manyang, and the state revenue commissioner Malual Wuor.

The swearing-in came three days after a state government reshuffle.
