Officials in Duk Padiet county of South Sudan’s Jonglei state on Tuesday destroyed huge amounts of illicit drugs that were impounded from a businessman in May.

Elijah Manyok, the acting county commissioner told Radio Tamazuj that the businessman identified as Peter Deng is serving a six-year term in prison after being found guilty of possessing and selling bhang in the county.

“We caught him in May in Duk Padiet selling 50 bundles of bhang which he brought from Juba. On June 28, a local court jailed him for six years. And today (Tuesday) we burnt the drugs in presence of the locals and the drug dealer,” he said.

The local official noted a drop in the crimes in the county after the government launched a crackdown on drug dealers.

“Armed robberies were on the rise in the residential areas and along the roads before the crackdown on the drug dealers," he added.

Manyok warned the local youth in the county against dealing with illicit drugs and urged civilians to report any suspected criminal.
