At least 1,200 head of cattle stolen during a raid on Sunday night raid in which a herdsman was killed in Duk County in Jonglei State have been recovered, local officials said.
Peter Latjor Chuol, the county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj that the stolen cattle were recovered on Monday after local youth pursued and attacked the raiders who he suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).
“On Sunday at 8 pm, a village called Pamaideng in Pajut Payam was attacked and a herdsman was killed and 1,250 cattle were raided,” he said. “The animals were later recovered by local youths who pursued and fought off the attackers. The youth arrived with all the cattle on Monday morning.”
Meanwhile, Mahmoud Chuol Peter, the director-general at the state information ministry, said calm has since been restored in the area.
“The Murle criminals attacked the village (Pamaideng) at 8 pm on Sunday and took cattle,” he said. “Luckily, the youth responded and brought back all the cattle. The area is now calm.”
On his part, Abraham Kelang, the GPAA information minister, said they were not aware of any attack carried out by their youth in Duk County.
