Duk County dwellers have a reason to smile following a move by the UN Mission (UNMISS) to hand over a new police post to the authorities to help improve security in the area.

The new facility constructed under UNMISS’s Quick Impact project to the tune of USD 50 000 was handed over to the government during a ceremony in Gadiang town on Tuesday.

Jonglei State Police Commissioner Elia Costa told Radio Tamazuj that the new police post will help them to foster security in the county.

“Gadiang is a strategic town on a junction of roads to Akobo and Pibor. So, this will help us boost security,” Elia said. “This post has four offices to serve the post commander, chief investigator, officers, and the one for statement taking. It is also equipped with two cells for males and females plus an ammunition store and a restroom.”

The police commissioner lauded the United Nations Mission in the country for the handover, calling it a relief. He said the new police post will help pacify the troubled Jonglei.

For his part, Jacob Akech Dengdit, the state deputy governor, also appreciated UNMISS for constructing the police, saying the new station is leverage to the government’s plan of establishing Gadiang as a peace centre for the communities of Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Area.

Meanwhile, Geetha Pious, the UNMISS head of field office in Jonglei State, said the new police post will support ongoing initiatives to restore peaceful coexistence among the rival communities of the Greater Jonglei state, reiterating their commitment to peace in Jonglei State and the Pibor area.

The Greater Jonglei state has long been a volatile area and is no stranger to deadly violence, especially intercommunal clashes. These clashes have left a lot of deaths and displaced people in their wake.
