Drought and insecurity causing hunger in Kajo-Keji

Kajo-Keji county of Yei River state is at risk of hunger due to a prolonged drought and insecurity in the area, local residents tell Radio Tamazuj.

For almost two months, there has been no rainfall in the region and residents say it has devastated farming production.

“Maize, groundnuts and cows are badly affected because the leaves have dried up. This year we don’t think there will be good harvest if it continues like this,” a resident tells Radio Tamazuj.

Insecurity causing hunger

At the same time, some residents say insecurity has placed the region at risk of drought. In recent months, government officials have said that an armed group is operating in the region. Some officials accuse the group of being affiliated with the SPLM-IO.

“In Nyepo, Liwollo, Liri and other Payams, the people have been disturbed by the movements of armed men preventing us from accessing our cultivation sites,” a resident says.

The resident urged the government to fully implement the peace agreement, which could solve the insecurity. They also called on humanitarian partners to extend hand of support to the area.
