Drones struck power stations in the cities of New Halfa and Aroma in Sudan’s eastern Kassala State early on Monday, triggering fires at the targeted sites.

Firefighting operations were still underway as authorities worked to assess the extent of the damage.

Eyewitnesses in New Halfa and Aroma localities told Radio Tamazuj that several drones had attacked electricity and power facilities in the two cities.

Mohamed Salih, a witness in New Halfa, said three drones attacked the city at around 2 a.m. on Monday, firing several missiles and causing powerful explosions and flames to erupt inside the targeted facilities.

“The extent of the damage remains unclear, but no casualties have been reported,” he reported. “Two of the drones were intercepted, while the third managed to carry out the strike.”

In Aroma, Jaafar Idris, a resident, said several drones had targeted the Haya transformer station and the Al-Sahil fuel depot.

“A civil defense team, led by the Kassala State police chief and the director of Aroma locality police, arrived at the scene to help extinguish the fires,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kassala State Government Secretariat’s website reported that the state governor, retired Major General Al-Sadiq Al-Azraq, had visited the site to assess the damage caused by the attack.
