Drivers resume transport to Rumbek East following ambush attack

Ethiopian and Somali drivers operating in the Lakes state capital, Rumbek, have resumed transportation to Rumbek East following the killing of an Ethiopian driver along that route last month.

Officials say the driver was shot by armed youth.

Agotguong Maker, a mini-bus driver, said in an interview that they have been mourning their colleagues since the incident occurred.

“This is the problem that led to our closure,” he said. “But now we have resumed our work even if some of us are dying.” He called on security officials to find and prosecute the people responsible for killing the driver.

Lakes state has experienced a series of ambushes in recent months on the roads connecting the state capital with outlying counties. Last month the state government instructed administrative police to clear bushes from the main roads, though the task has not been started.
