Drivers in Western Lakes State are calling upon state authorities to reduce fuel prices after the governor reduced transport fares.
Last week, governor John Deng Mamer Yuol ordered the reduction of transport fares from Rumbek to Juba and Wau from 7000 and 5000 to 5000 and 3000 South Sudanese Pounds respectively.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Western Lakes State supervisor of drivers Abraham Majak Nhial said they are abiding by the new regulations but face challenges with the price of fuel.
“We appeal to our government to help us by reducing the price of fuel. All the drivers, the people, the governor is in charge of all of us. We all have agreed to his directives and we are working with the prices he proposed. But we want him to help with the price of fuel. This is our only problem,” he said.
Majak said the price of fuel is too high and each jerrican of fuel costs 6,500 SSPs. He added that with the reduction in the price of fares, they are not able to make profit.
However, he added that the security situation has greatly improved.
“We are now able to travel with passengers without any other fear of road insecurity, looting and road ambushes. People are sleeping and moving freely on the road from Rumbek to Juba and Rumbek-Wau,” he noted.
