The UN’s refugee agency said the Thursday night attack on Makpandu in Western Equatoria’s Yambio county caused ‘panic’ among some 3,500 refugees living there, but none of them were hurt.
UNHCR’s Assistant Representative for Protection in South Sudan Isabelle Misic said in a statement to Radio Tamazuj that refugees ran into the bush when an armed group attacked the Makpandu police station, which is in Bangasu Payam.
Misic said six guns were reportedly looted during the incident, but no relief property was damaged. The refugees have since returned to the camp where normal market and church activities have resumed, Misic said.
UNHCR received no reports of casualties or abductions, Misic said. Radio Tamazuj earlier reported a rape and an abduction during the incident, citing local authorities.
Makpandu hosts refugees mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Meanwhile, there are reports of road insecurity in Nzara, Ezo, and Mundri West and East counties of Western Equatoria over the long weekend.
