Dr. John Garang University reopens after students withdrew strike

The Vice Chancellor of Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology, Prof. Julia Aker Duany, said all lecturers and other staff would resume work on Wednesday, April 12, after students withdrew their week-long strike over tuition fees.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj from Juba, Aker said the university has already resolved students’ grievances which sparked the strike last week.

She said yesterday. “The university is reopening tomorrow [Wednesday]. All lecturers and workers will go back to start their normal duties.”

Last week, a group of students from the university staged a peaceful strike over high tuition fees imposed by the management contradicting the fees structure issued in October last year by South Sudan’s Council of Higher Education.

“We will resume our lectures on Wednesday,” students’ representative, Marial Gabriel Akoon said.

Akoon pointed out that their complaints have been addressed under the unified fees structure used by all five public universities.

According to the unified fees structure, Akoon said, students of Environment Science College would pay 2,535 SSP, students of Management Science College would pay 2,235 SSP and students of Education College would pay 1,950 SSP.

He called on the Vice Chancellor and her deputy to work together for the progress and prosperity of the university.
