The Chairman of Teaching Staff Association at Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology, Deng Mach said the teaching staff will not give lectures until a number of students whom the lecturers considered ringleaders of strike are expelled from the university.
Last month, a group of students held demonstrations against raised tuition fees at the university. The protesting students called for the removal of the vice chancellor and his deputy.
Mach told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the ringleaders had physically attacked the professor of chemistry Dr. Robert Deng and slapped the secretary of the vice chancellor’s office.
“The teaching staff resolved that the students who are responsible for these wrong doings must leave the campus immediately and let those who want to learn remain,” he said.
Mach further said the decision came after a resolution reached by the university’s teaching staff on April 11.
A student, who preferred anonymity, denied Mach’s claims that they staged violent protests at the university. “These are those playing their music to make sure the university remains close. We were so professional, we just took the keys. We have never slapped anyone,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor of Dr. John Garang Memorial University of Science and Technology, Prof. Julia Aker Duany, on April 12, said all lecturers and other staff were asked to resume work this week.
