In an effort to enhance its academic program and promote students productivity, the administration of Dr. John Garang University has embarked on a large-scale agricultural project.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Prof. Abraham Matoc Dhal, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, highlighted the university’s commitment to comprehensive education.
Prof. Abraham Matoc explained that the College of Agriculture not only trains individuals and conducts research projects but also aims to go beyond traditional academic activities. “Creating jobs and providing services is geared towards poverty eradication,” Prof. Abraham explained.
The Vice-Chancellor further emphasized that the agricultural program would contribute to the economic prosperity of the local community. “Through our centre in Awerial, which has been graciously offered by the local community, the university’s involvement in agriculture will enable us to enter the market and sustain both the college and the entire institution,” he elaborated.
Prof. Abraham Matoc also outlined the cultivation plans, stating, “We have identified several cash crops, including Irish potatoes, onions, maize, sorghum, sesame, and groundnuts. With a land area of 2500 feddans, we aim to provide training and empower the community economically.”
Expressing support for the university’s project, Philip Mawut Garang, the Awerial County commissioner, anticipated positive outcomes for the local community. “The program has been progressing well since March. We have allocated them land for farming and schooling, and now they have commenced cultivation,” he confirmed.
One university student, John Kuol, commended the university’s initiative, stating, “We wholeheartedly appreciate the university’s decision, as it not only offers a practical experience to students but also creates research opportunities. Furthermore, it will generate employment prospects for both students and the local community.”
With the launch of this ambitious agriculture project, Dr. John Garang University aims to revolutionize its academic approach by integrating practical knowledge, fostering economic growth, and benefiting the surrounding community.
