Dr. Chol Deng reappointed as Nilepet Managing Director

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has reappointed Dr. Chol Deng Thon for the second time as the Managing Director of the national oil company, Nilepet. Chol Thon replaces Bol Ring Mourwel.

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has reappointed Dr. Chol Deng Thon for the second time as the Managing Director of the national oil company, Nilepet. Chol Thon replaces Bol Ring Mourwel.

Dr. Chol was appointed in a presidential decree read on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Friday evening.

He first served as the Managing Director of the national oil firm from September 2017 to September 2020.

Incorporated in 2009 after the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005 and two years before South Sudan gained its independence in 2011, Nilepet holds a stake in each oil-producing consortium operating in South Sudan.

The company is active across the scope of all South Sudan’s oil and gas activities and is responsible for regulating fuel imports, distribution and storage and also running its own retail stations.

In the services sector, Nilepet has entered into a variety of important joint ventures with international firms, with the aim of building capacity in South Sudan and optimizing operations.
