Dozens of inmates in Warrap state prisons are facing shortages of food amid demands from the prisons administration for the government in Juba to intervene in order to rescue their lives.
Tonj North Commissioner Tito Sijin said about 166 prison inmates in his county are facing a shortage of food for three days now. He said they have contacted the South Sudan Prison Service in Juba about the issue but they did not respond until now.
Sijin pointed out that he used to buy food for the inmates from the market but it was not enough, adding that the problem is not in Tonj North alone but also in other places in the state.
Many right groups including Human Rights Watch have said in previous reports that there is illegal imprisonment and dire conditions in many prisons in South Sudan, calling for the need to improve the justice system in South Sudan.
