A cargo aircraft flying from South Sudan’s capital Juba toward the oil-producing Paloich area in Upper Nile crashed shortly after take-off this morning.
The plane crashed shortly after crossing the Nile river near Juba. Sources reported that the Russian-made aircraft had been chartered by the South Sudanese government. Wreckage of the plane was found opposite Hai Gabat on Juba Na Bari Island on the east bank of the Nile.
Dozens of bodies have been recovered so far and taken to Juba Teaching Hospital. There are reported to be at least two survivors, including a soldier and a child.
Cargo seen after the crash includes food items and boxes of wine.
