South Sudan’s national assembly earlier this week deliberated on a bill granting new legal powers to the National Security Service.
The bill broadens the legal mandate of the service from gathering information and analysis to policing against “crimes and offenses against the state.”
South Sudan’s Speaker of the Assembly claims that this version of the bill, made available for download below, was passed through parliament on Wednesday.
Other MPs from both the ruling party and opposition claim that no quorum was reached on the day of the vote.
