Doctors strike at Wau Teaching Hospital

Doctors and interns at the Wau Teaching Hospital went on strike this week in protest against the deteriorating the environment in the hospital, and for not getting their July and August salaries. The director of Wau Teaching Hospital denied that there even is a strike, and sternly warned journalists against reporting on it. A number of interns and doctors hired by the administration of Wau Teaching Hospital said that the hospital said they did not get their July and August salaries. They also pointed to ‘terrible’ conditions at the facility, which serves as the main referral hospital for four states. Dr. Youhanna Miller, speaking at his home in Wau, said that they went on strike since 1 October and will continue for two days, in protest for not getting their salaries of July and August. He added that they had addressed the hospital administration in a note with their demands. This is the second time they have gone on strike, he said. Radio Tamazuj contacted the hospital director in Wau for comment, but the director denied the strike and threatened two journalists, one from Radio Tamazuj and the other from the town’s Catholic radio station, not to report on the strike. Doctors affirm that they are striking.
