Doctor: suspected W. Equatoria Ebola case was epilepsy

Western Equatoria State Minister of Health Dr. Bono John denied reports of an Ebola outbreak in Maridi County.

Western Equatoria State Minister of Health Dr. Bono John denied reports of an Ebola outbreak in Maridi County.

He said there was a suspected case of Ebola in Maridi but it was later confirmed by medical tests as epilepsy disease.

Bono told Radio Tamazuj that most of local population in the state are complaining about malaria and pneumonia and other inflammatory diseases.

In September, an Ebola prevention team of doctors led by national minister of health Riek Gai in collaboration with health partners carried out sensitization and Ebola awareness exercises in the communities of Western Equatoria state along the border with Democratic Republic of Congo.

Bono further reported shortages of health workers in the state, saying they have only seven doctors.

The minister complained about lack of medicines too. He said medicines were not sent to the area since September.

He attributed the problem to poor road conditions connecting the state with the capital Juba.

“We rely on health organizations only in terms of medicines,” he said.
