Dispute over cow leaves 2 relatives dead, 1 injured in Ayod County

A man shot and injured his maternal uncle and later shot and killed another relative who had intervened to arbitrate a dispute over a cow in a village on the outskirts of Jonglei State’s Ayod town on Sunday night.

A man shot and injured his maternal uncle and later shot and killed another relative who had intervened to arbitrate a dispute over a cow in a village on the outskirts of Jonglei State’s Ayod town on Sunday night.

The assailant was later shot dead by his uncle after the former shot and killed the relative who had come to resolve their dispute.

Speaking on Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, James Bol Makuey, the Ayod County commissioner, said the incident emanated from a disagreement as a man demanded that an extra bull awarded to his maternal uncle during his mother’s marriage over 20 years ago be refunded.

“The incident occurred in Jony village between Wau and Kwach-Deng Payams on Sunday at 7 p.m. What happened was that a man went to his uncle’s house to demand a cow that was accidentally awarded during his mother’s marriage a long time ago. There, they disagreed and the man shot and injured his maternal uncle,” he explained. “Immediately, a relative of the injured man intervened to mediate only to be shot dead immediately by the furious man demanding the cow.”

He continued: “On seeing that the man who had come to mediate was shot dead innocently, the uncle took a gun and shot his nephew dead.”

The county commissioner said that he went to the incident scene on Sunday and that the matter was being handled.

“This incident was unfortunate and the two families are collecting cows to be paid as blood compensation and for rituals to be conducted to bring peace between the two families which are one.”
