Displaced White Nile fishermen call for assistance

A number of fishermen in Kosti, White Nile state, who were allegedly displaced following South Sudan’s secession, have called for the development of an area south of the town of Rabak known as al-Hadib into a bustling fishing area.

They called for the Sudanese authorities to provide fishing equipment such as boats and nets and expressed their fear of the practice dying out in the region.  A local initiative has already allowed the fishermen to organise into cooperatives and advocate.

The secession of South Sudan from Sudan resulted in the displacement of a thousand fishermen in White Nile state they claimed.

“A loss in fishing income means loss of families’ primary source of livelihood”.
