Displaced citizen shot near UN 'protection' camp in Juba

A South Sudanese citizen was shot and wounded at the pedestrian gate of the UN's 'Protection of Civilians' displaced persons camp in Juba, South Sudan.

Wiarol Mayiel Machak who lives in the camp was shot on his right upper leg when two gunmen approached and shot him while he was riding a motorbike.

"I was leaving from pedestrian gate where I drop a passenger who was going to PoC3, while I was trying to return back, on reaching the junction he shot me while on very high speed," Mayiel said. "it was around 7:40 pm I was just running without imagining that there was anything wrong."

Mayiel said he had recognized the person who shot him, saying it is a person whose property was destroyed by the UN last month in a joint operation with South Sudan's police and military.

The injured citizen urged the government and UNMISS to deal with the suspect to avoid insecurity. He also urged people in the camp to avoid moving between the camps at the late evening to avoid these incidents.

Mayiel was speaking in the International Medical Corps clinic in the camp where is currently admitted. A health worker who visited him Friday said he is recovering and could be release anytime.
