At least 250 head of cattle have reportedly died of diseases apparently rampant in the Doro refugee camp in Maban County, Upper Nile state. Large numbers of cattle keepers in the camp have complained about the outbreak of cattle diseases while veterinary services in the area are absent.
“The outbreak of cattle diseases has become a serious indicator: the daily death rate among cows has reached 250.” said El Omda Amir Juma, a resident of Doro camp.
Juma attributed the outbreak of the diseases to rampant flies as well as the absence of veterinary medicines in the area. Though the refugees have requested help from international organisations, no veterinary medicines reached the camp. The cattle herders have also appealed to the authorities concerned for veterinary services to be quickly set up in the area.
