Joint peace committees between members of the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya tribes in the contested territory of Abyei held meetings in an attempt to find a solution to rampant insecurity in the region, a government official in Abyei said.

Last week, at least three people were reported killed and five others injured in an attack in Amiet joint market that was later closed due to surging insecurity.

The Secretary General of Abyei Administrative Area, Ring Deng Kuol, told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that the joint peace committees between the two tribes have been meeting to discuss insecurity and suggest solutions.

Kuol said two committees have already been formed to look into the issue of compensation over stolen property and organizing Amiet market as well as tracing the criminals.

He called on the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) to intervene and protect the civilians.
