A conference to review inter-communal relations during the last migration season of the Misseriya nomads in Aweil East State started in Wanyjok town on Tuesday.

More than 400 delegates from the Dinka Malual and Misseriya tribes are attending the three-day meeting.

Peter Makuach Kuol, the Dinka Malual community leader, said crimes are still being recorded on both sides, despite the peaceful efforts of the joint border peace committees.

He further said at least five people, including children, were killed from their side, but only three were compensated for by the Messeriya.

Bakar Abdel-Jalil Bakar, a representative of the Messeriya tribe, said community leaders attending the peace conference will discuss outstanding issues that have not been resolved.

He further said they lost two people.

Santino Amol Majok, who represented Twic community, said his community was seeking to have strong relations with Dinka Malual, Rezeigat and Messeriya tribes.

“We want to start a new chapter in order to develop people in both countries, especially pastoralist groups,” Majok said.

The Northern Bahr el Ghazal region peace coordinator, William Kolong Pioth said the conference aims at reviewing past agreements and challenges in the implementation process.

The conference is being organized by the South Sudan Peace Commission, supported financially by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other partners.
