The Governor of Jonglei State, Philip Aguer Panyang, said a peace conference between chiefs and local youth from the Murle and Dinka Bor tribes in Jonglei and Boma states would kick off on Monday.

The proposed conference comes after attacks on Kotchar and Nanam areas in Boma state, in which dozens of people were reported killed and some children abducted.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, Governor Aguer said the two sides were carrying out consultations to hold a peace conference on peaceful coexistence between the two feuding communities.

“We have a vision for a real peace in Greater Jonglei and we are planning to organize the conference on the 20^th of this month. This peace will work if there is a joint police force deployed in the area,” said Aguer.

The governor denied any involvement of his government in the recent attack that was carried out by local youth from Jonglei state on Kotchar and Nanam areas in Boma state. He claimed that the incident was a retaliatory attack.

For his part, John Achuan, the Information Minister in Boma state, said they plan to hold a peace conference in a natural ground under the auspices of the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). However, he didn’t say whether the meeting would take place on Monday or not.
