More than 2,000 flood-affected elderly men and women in the Duk Padiet area of Duk County, Jonglei State received an assortment of non-food items over the weekend.
The support, a donation from the Duk women in the diaspora, includes clothes, plastic sheets, mosquito nets, among others.
“On Saturday, we received various items like mosquito nets and plastic sheets for a makeshift building. I heard the support is from our women in America. I am thankful to them because this support, for me, is the first of its kind since the floods started,” Nyanduk Dhuol, one of the beneficiaries told Radio Tamazuj.
Another beneficiary James Marial Deng also welcomed the support, and called for more help, saying the floods destroyed their livelihoods, leaving them vulnerable since July.
For his part, Elijah Manyok Deng, the acting Duk County commissioner, welcomed the donation, saying 2,500 elderly men and women benefited.
He, however, went on to appeal to aid agencies in Jonglei to intervene, saying the humanitarian situation remains dire.
Floods have hit Duk, and the other parts of Jonglei since July, leaving more than 350,000 people homeless and without food.
Last month, a report released jointly by the government and the United Nations projected that 7.24 million people in parts of the country could face severe food shortage sometime in 2021 due to the combined effects of the floods, conflicts, and the Covid-19 pandemic.
