A local official says that there have been dozens of recent cases of watery diarrhoea in Maban County of Upper Nile State, amid concerns of deteriorating health conditions.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, Upper Nile County Commissioner John Ivo Mounto said the diarrhoea and other waterborne diseases have recently killed about 36 children in the area.

Mounto said the 36 children who died belonged to the internally displaced people who fled to the area due to the ongoing conflict. He added the conflict-affected people were experiencing a shortage of food, shelter and drinking water.

The official pointed out that about 14,000 conflict-affected people received food from humanitarian organizations, but it is inadequate. He called on the international NGOs and the national government in Juba to provide assistance to the conflict-affected people in the area.
