The Association for Media Development in South Sudan has opened its tenth annual conference bringing together journalists and members of the country’s security forces in Jonglei state capital Bor.

The two-day conference, which each year is held in a different state, aims to strengthen mutual understanding and good working relationship between the media and security.

This year’s meeting includes 48 participants from media, police, national security services, and SPLA. The Union of Journalists of South Sudan and National Editors Forum were also in attendance.

State Minister of Local Governance and Law Enforcement Peter Wal Athiu said: “We are a democratic country according to our national constitution which gives way for freedom of speech.”

“The role of security apparatus is to safeguard the human rights and civil liberties of our people including journalists,” he added.
