Deteriorating security 'causes suffering' in Abbasia region

The Abbasia-Tageli region of South Kordofan is plagued by a deteriorating security situation and rising commodity prices.

Several inhabitants told Radio Tamazuj that the region is experiencing a security crisis, with repeated incidents prompting local authorities to prevent the natives from visiting the nearby markets.

They also complain of a sharp increase in prices of consumer goods in the region. For example, the price of a pound of sugar has risen to SSP4 ($1.32) and oil to SSP8 ($2.64).

“The prices have shot-up due to the recent security crisis. Now a sack of sorghum has increased to SSP300 ($100). People are always in a hurry and are worried when purchasing commodities in the market as they fear imminent attacks by armed militias. The government is preventing overcrowding in the market for fear of clashes so people have to wait until the situation becomes calm and normal”, a citizen acknowledged.
