Detention of professor and youths in Damazin

Prof. Yasser Mohamed Amer, a lecturer of Blue Nile University, and a number of youth leaders have been detained by security organs in Damazin since last week.

“Professor Amer and two of the town youth leaders, Badr al-Din al-Jazuli and Mohammed Ibrahim were arrested by security authorities for more than a week,” a source told Radio Tamazuj in a phone interview from Damazin.

He added that the security elements in Damazin last week launched a mass arrest campaign among the youth activists who have been calling on the Sudanese government to stop war in the South Kordofan region and resort to negotiation with the SPLM northern sector.

Previously, the same organs arrested activist Abdel Munem Mustafa before turning to Professor Yasser Amer and the two youths. Reportedly the security apparatus have been allowing food and clothes to reach the prisoners but they were preventing people to visit the detainees.

Some sources noticed that Damazin town had been witnessing a kind of high-security alert in preparation for the visit of President Bashir to the area.

Meanwhile, the family members of the detainees urged the state security authorities to release them or bring them to trial.
