Detained officials accused of corruption released in Aweil

Officials of the Northern Bahr El Ghazal State government who were detained in connection with misappropriation of money several months ago have been released on bail. A court has not yet issued any verdict against them.

In February, the Secretary-General of the Government Garang Kuot Kuot and Director-General of the Finance Ministry Sabrino Majok Majok and others were arrested for their alleged role in a corruption scandal.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday, the Northern Bahr El Ghazal State Deputy Governor Gen. Salva Tong Ayat stated the prosecution has released the imprisoned civil servants on bail.

He noted that the men, who are charged in conncetion with embezzlement of teachers’ salaries, are still waiting for a final decision to be taken by a court.

The deputy governor vehemently denied the alleged interference of the state government in the work of the court in order to secure the release of the detained officials, saying the investigation committee has already completed its task and then referred the cases for prosecution.

“The last group were released on bail last week by the prosecutor, so they are now free like the rest of the citizens, but they are still waiting for the rulings of the court,” he explained.
