Despite being freed by court, two South Sudanese pastors still detained in Khartoum

Two South Sudanese pastors who were held in a Khartoum jail for nearly eight months are still not allowed to leave the Sudanese capital, their lawyer said.

One of the lawyers who defended Rev. Yat Michael and Pastor Peter Yein said restrictions from the Sudan National Intelligence and Security Services are still in place, preventing the two from leaving the country.

Michael was arrested in December 2014 after preaching in a church in Khartoum. Yein was arrested the next month after delivering a letter to the Ministry of Guidance Religious Endowment asking after the whereabouts of his colleague.

Their lawyer accused the NISS of prolonging the ban without legal justification.

“It is illegal to keep the two pastors banned from travel,” he said, but announced the legal team would attempt other methods to get around the restrictions.

The two pastors were freed on August 5 following a court decision.
