The civil unrest in South Sudan has negatively affected the economies of both Sudan and Uganda, according to a top South Sudanese opposition official.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj from Khartoum on Tuesday, Deng Alor Kuol, a leading member of the SPLM-FDs group said the ongoing war in the youngest nation has a spillover effect to neighboring countries, citing business losses in Uganda and Sudan.

The South Sudanese politician explained that South Sudan was the largest export destination for goods from Sudan and Uganda before the outbreak of war.

“Sudan now wants resumption of South Sudan oil and cross-border trade. President Museveni also came to support the ongoing peace process in Khartoum because our trade with Uganda has also been affected by the ongoing war,” he said.

Alor believes that peace and stability in South Sudan will bring back operations to normality.

The opposition official expressed optimism that they could reach a peace agreement with President Salva Kiir for the sake of the people of South Sudan.

“The current destruction you see in South Sudan was a result of minor differences,” he said.

The South Sudanese foreign minister emphasized the importance of democracy to transform the newest nation.
