Demonstrators inside UN protection camps call for peace

Citizens living in displacement camps with United Nations bases in Juba demonstrated against the ongoing war yesterday.

The internally displaced people urged the UN to pressure President Salva Kiir to sign the current IGAD-plus peace agreement. The deadline for signing passed earlier this week, but Kiir requested an additional 15 days for consultations.

Dom Kobong, one of the demonstrators, told Radio Tamazuj that about 7,000 displaced people participated in the demonstration.

There were similar demonstrations in Abyei, the disputed territory between South Sudan and Sudan.

The main rebel opposition group and the group of formerly detained politicians both signed onto the agreement.

Kiir’s government has mobilized supporters to protest against the IGAD-plus peace deal today.
