Death toll rises to 7 in Jonglei State inter-clan violence

Authorities in Jonglei State have confirmed that the death toll from the recent inter-clan conflict in Nyirol County has risen to seven.

The clashes erupted last week between the Cie-Pual and Cie-Khertut sections of Cie-Dumin in Lankien following a revenge killing on 29 August 2024 when a member of Cie-Dumin killed an individual from Cie-Pual.

Jonglei State Information Minister Nyamar Lony Thichot Ngundeng reported that four deaths occurred on the first day of the conflict with an additional three fatalities recorded on 31 October. She urged the communities in Nyirol to maintain calm while the government works to address the situation.

“The total number of deceased is seven,” she stated. “The message from the government is clear; we urge communities to prioritize peace and refrain from senseless revenge killings.”

In response to the violence, Jonglei State Governor Majoub Biel Turuk established a committee composed of government officials and community leaders to identify the underlying causes of the conflict and facilitate a peaceful resolution.

The Jonglei State Government has condemned the ongoing cycle of revenge killings and is calling on all communities to embrace peace.
